“Jo Hyan-ryong, who came to be known as National Preceptor Wonjin, was so famous for his filial piety that
the king named his birthplace “Hyoja-ri.” During the reign of King Sejong,
Yeochungseonhyo was erected as a monument of Hyoja-ri. At present, his portrait
is enshrined in the Nahanjeon Hall of the Bulhoesa Temple, and his sarira-stupa
remaining on the temple site has been designated as Jeollanam-do Tangible Cultural
Heritage No. 225.
On the front side of the main body of the
sarira-stupa, there is an inscription, “Wonjinguksatongjojihap,” and on the
side, it is inscribed, “Yeonu-4-nyeonjeongsaoworirip.” The Sarira-stupa of National Preceptor Wonjin is in the shape of a
circle-oriented octagon, and thus serves as an important example that shows how
the circle-oriented octagon sarira-stupas have evolved during the Goryeo
period. The foundation stone is thick and in a rectangular shape, created with
three large stones. On its top, there is a stone carved into the shape of an
upside-down lotus flower with eight petals depicted in sunken relief. The main
body stone is in an octagonal shape with entasis, and contains an inscription.
The roof stone is in an octagonal shape with a distinctive hip.
The sarira-stupa may not have a dynamic and
balanced appearance of the sarira-stupas made in the 9th century
during the Unified Silla Period, but it has an importance significance as its
absolute age is identifiable.”
