“The Unhungsaji Temple Site in Naju is
famous for the Standing Gilt Bronze Buddha (Jeollanam-do Tangible Cultural
Heritage No. 260) that has stood in its place for a thousand years. It has a
pear-shaped illumination that is commonly observed among the gilt bronze Buddha
statues made in the Three Kingdoms Period, and a single pedestal has been used
for the main statue and the illumination, which is characteristic of the Buddha
statues dating from the 8th and 9th centuries (late
Unified Silla Period).
While there is considerable wear on the
head of the Buddha, the traces of his curly hair still remain, and the fleshy
protuberance on the crown of the Buddha is well-depicted.
It is 11.2cm in height, so it is deemed
that it was made to be carried by the monks. All of the gilt bronze Buddha
statues that had been previously discovered in the Jeollanam-do Province had no
illumination components, and in comparison, the one found at Unheungsa Temple
is unique in that the main body, illumination and pedestal were cast together.
As such, it is one of few extant gilt bronze statues that can be traced back to
the Unified Silla Period.”
