“Choi Hui-ryang, who
was serving as the Goheunghyeongam of Jeolla-do at the time of Imjinwaeran
(Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592), reported to Admiral Yi Sun-sin, who was
the then-Jeoldosa of the Left Jeolla-do Navy, and the Jeolla-do Gwanchalsa, on
the victories against the Japanese forces from March 20 until July 12 of the 31st
year of King Seonjo’s reign. The documented reports were compiled together into
Imnancheopboseomok (Collection of Books on the Intelligence during
Imjinwaeran). The documents, which had been separate, were grafted together
into a book by Choi Gi-jeong, a descendant of a patriot who was imprisoned for taking
part in the March 1st Movement.
Choi Hui-ryang, whose
pseudonym was Irong and posthumous name was Musuk, was born in Naju. After
passing the national examination for the military in 1594, he assisted Yi
Gye-jeong, a naval officer of Chungcheong, in defending the country against the
Japanese forces. Upon the outbreak of Jeongyujaeran (Japan's Second Invasion of
Korea) in 1597, he was appointed as the Heungyanghyeongam. Under the leadership
of Yi Sun-sin, he led his men to victory in the battles of Myeongnyang,
Cheomsan and Yegyo, and he significantly contributed to the victory in the
Battle of Noryang.”
