“The Standing Stone Buddha (Treasure No.
426) is situated 10m away from the Stone Statues of the Seven Buddhas. It is a
rock-carved Buddha dating from the Goryeo Dynasty in a form that is rarely
observed in Korea.
There are back illuminating adornments of
the statues of Buddha, which are called the Juhyeonggeosingwang, with a
distinction between the head and body illuminations. For the head illumination,
there is a carving of two circles, with a lotus flower pattern near the head
and a flame pattern outside, whereas there are cloud and flame patterns in the
body illumination. The Standing Stone Buddha shows distinctive features on the
Buddha’s face, and it even gives off a rigid appearance. The imposing look on
the face, the eyes that seem to be gazing afar in prayer, and proud appearance
exuded by the shoulders demonstrate the power and cultural capacity of the
early Goryeo Dynasty.”
