Wansacheon is the stage for a well-known love story in Korea that revolves around Wang Geon, who came to conquer Naju under the orders of King Gungye of Goguryeo, and Lady Beodeul.

In 911 AD, Wang Geon was marching forward for a battle against Gyeon Hwon of Baekje when he became thirsty and sought water from a woman nearby. Worried that he may suffer from indigestion if he drank too quickly, the woman gave him water in a bowl with a willow leaf placed inside. Taejo, deeply moved by her gesture, went to her father to ask for her hand in marriage. Later, Hyejong was born, and the village came to be called Heungnyong-dong, with “Yong” symbolizing the “King.” The woman was later crowned as Queen Janghwa. Today, next to Wansacheon sits a monument of the queen, and there is also a contemporary sculpture depicting the first encounter between Wang Geon and Queen Janghwa.

Wansacheon became the place where Wang Geon first formed ties with a powerful clan of Naju in the process of founding Goryeo, and this resulted in the birth of Hyejong. For this reason, Naju came to be called Eohyang (Home of the Maternal Family of the Royal Court).
