Introducing famous Naju attractions with a special charm.
Its beauty comes from the harmony of history and modern culture within. The spiritual healing offered by Naju comes from this harmony.
Dongjeommun is the main gateway to Naju and
the eastern gate of the Najueupseong Fortress.
The Najucheon Stream flows inside the
Najueupseong Fortress, and the eastern gate is situated near the downstream
area where the stream, flowing from west to east, meets the Yeongsangang River.
When you climb up to the second story of Dongjeommun, you will be met with a
full view of the Yeongsangang River and Najudaegyo Bridge. There is a
fascinating story associated with the name, “Dongjeommun.” The name comes from
“Dongjeomuhae” in Seogyeong (Shangshu; The Book of Documents written
by Confucius), and it means that the Najucheon Stream flows toward the east
into the Yeonsanggang River before reaching the sea. In the late Goryeo
Dynasty, Sambong Jeong Do-jeon was banished to Naju after advocating the need
to build friendly relations with the Ming Dynasty, while keeping the Yuan
Dynasty at arm’s length. He climbed up to the eastern gate of Najueupseong and
recited “The Letter to the Residents of Naju (Deungnajudongnuyuburoseo). Dool
Kim Yong-ok noted these historical events when writing the signboard for
Dongjeommun after it was restored in 2006.
