“Geuman-dong was one of the three most
prominent villages of Jeolla-do during the Joseon Dynasty, and it was comprised
of 12 communities. Ssanggyejeong, in particular, was established by
Munjeonggong Jeong Ga-sin during the reign of King Chungnyeong. It used to be
called Samhyeondang (Three Sages Pavilion) because Munjeonggong Jeong Ga-sin,
Munsokgong Kim Ju-jeong and Munhyeonggong Yun Bo studied there.
Later on, it came to be known as an iconic
pavilion of the Joseon Dynasty from the period of reign of King Sejo to King
Seonjo, as Eoeun Jeong Seo, Sin Suk-ju, Sin Mal-ju, Jugodang Gi Geon and
Banhwan Hong Cheon-gyeong gathered together with the sages across the country
to master academic disciplines. Also, this was where Geumandonggye was
implemented, and this practice is continuing even to this day. It is currently
jointly managed by the Naju Jeong clan, Hadong Jeong clan, Pungsan Hong clan
and Seoheung Kim clan. It’s been said that the signboard was written by Han
Seok-bong.”
