Introducing famous Naju attractions with a special charm.
Its beauty comes from the harmony of history and modern culture within. The spiritual healing offered by Naju comes from this harmony.
There is a red brick house on the right
side of Yeongsannaru Dock. It used to be the archive of the Oriental
Development Company that was built in 1910 to store a wide range of documents.
The Oriental Development Company was established by the Empire of Japan to
implement strategic exploitation of Joseon.
According to historical records, in July
1910, the Japanese forcibly purchased 1,800 grave lots and the rivers and
streams in Gungsam-myeon (Yeongsan, Seji and Wanggok) in Naju at a price of
80,000 won. At the time, the lands of Gungsam-myeon were part of the
Gyeongseongung Palace, where Imperial Noble Consort Eom to King Gojong stayed.
Later, in order to manage these lands, the Empire of Japan opened the Yeongsanpo
Office of the Oriental Development Company at 306-13 Yeongsan-dong in front of
the Yeongsanpogu Port. This is the location of the present-day Yeongsannaru tea
house area. Afterwards, the lands that were bought with force were sold to
Japanese migrants at giveaway prices.
Then, in the late 1920s, Mokpo, which was
then a small village on the southwestern coast, began to prosper as a new town,
and the office of the Oriental Development Company was relocated there. This
led to the closure of the office building in Yeongsanpo. Subsequently, the
building was inherited by Park Jae-cheol from his father and it has been
managed by the younger Park for 20 years. He and his wife are currently running
a tea house called Yeongsannaru, and the archive building, which is the only
building of the Oriental Development Company that remains intact today, has
been painted and renovated into a residence for the couple.
