The Yeongsangang River originating from Damyang traverses Gwangju and Naju before flowing into the sea in Mokpo.

As one of the five largest rivers in Korea, it replenishes the southwestern part of the country with water. Spanning 115.5km in distance, it is the shortest river out of the five rivers, and one-fifth the length of Nakdonggang. However, it has an abundant water flow, and near Muan, its size could be comparable to Hangang or Nakdonggang. The nutrients and soils carried from the upstream area contribute to the large granary in the downstream area, which is the location of the Naju Plains, the second biggest plain area following the Honam Plains.

There are many legendary tales explaining the origin of the name, Yeongsan. There is a legend regarding a daughter-in-law known for her filial piety, while some scholars claim that its name comes from the fact that it served as a refuge for the people of Heuksando Island in the late Goryeo Dynasty. The name is also associated with Yeongsanjochang, a state-run facility where the crops from the granaries were collected. What’s notable is that the name, “Yeongsangang,” was officially used on a 1:50,000 scale topographic map created in 1910 by the Japanese to be used in their invasion and exploitation of Korea. Later on, the entire river basin began to be called the “Yeongsan Zone” during the implementation of the National River Survey Project.
