The Natural Dyeing Culture Center is a special cultural space that was created using a closed-down school. There are permanent exhibition halls on the first underground floor and the first and second above-ground floors, and it also contains shops, experience centers, seminar rooms and research labs.
Naju was geographically suitable for the cultivation of indigofera and mulberry, which are used as dye ingredients. For this reason, Naju has been a supplier of natural dye, with the help of the masters of natural dye-making. The Natural Dyeing Culture Center was established for the primary purpose of preserving, supplying, carrying on, industrializing and performing research and development projects on this traditional cultural practice. It was established as a foundation under the provision of the Civil Act in April 2006, and it has since been dedicated to developing the natural dyes of Korea and Naju.
Naju has produced two people who have been designated as intangible cultural heritage (natural dye artisans). The Natural Dyeing Culture Center currently displays and sells a wide range of natural dye products manufactured by some 30 exceptional companies. The Operations Bureau of the Natural Dyeing Culture Center is situated in Hoejin-ri, Dasi-myeon, Naju, and here, you can not only understand the history of natural dye, but also engage in experience programs that provide information on indigofera, red clay, gardenia seeds and other ingredients used in the making of natural dyes in Naju.
