Jangdongri Ancient Tombs are speculated to have been built between the early Iron Age and the Proto-Three Kingdom Period, and be associated with the predecessors to the group of people that built the massive jar coffins found in the Yeongsangang river basin. These ancient tombs have been designated as Cultural Heritage Material No. 220.
According to a survey conducted by the Gwangju National Museum in 2008, a wide range of artifacts that can shed light on people’s lives in the Proto-Three Kingdom Period were excavated from the hill area where the ancient tombs are located. The earthen beads, glass beads and slags produced as a byproduct of glass products were collected in the layer representing this era. Through these artifacts, one can take a glimpse into the bead-related costumes of Mahan, and the religious practices of the people at the time.
At the Jangdong-ri Ancient Tombs site, a survey of the shell layer accompanied by the clay stripe pottery dating from the early Iron Age and the hard plain pottery and beaten pottery showed a cultural continuity. A large number of fragments of earthenware including clay stripe pottery and mounted dishes were found, and this presented a possibility that these were associated ancestral rites.
