“Donggok-ri Ancient Tombs are massive ancient tombs found in Donggok-ri, Dasi-myeon, Naju-si. They were designated as Jeollanam-do Cultural Heritage Material No. 219 in 2001.
Donggok-ri located in the west of Munpyeongcheon Stream is a hilly area. There is a concentrated cluster of ancient tombs within a radius of around 3km near the midstream area of Munpyeongcheon.
Donggok-ri Hoengsan Ancient Tomb No. 1 is located behind a private residence near the end of a hill extending in the southeast direction of the northern end of Hoengsan Village. The residents call it “Josan.” Donggok-ri Hoengsan Ancient Tomb No. 1, in particular, has been significantly damaged as a result of farmland and orchard development, and an emergency excavation study was conducted in November 2006. Two jar coffins buried upright, one jar coffin buried horizontally, and a tunnel-shaped stone chamber were discovered. From inside the tunnel-shaped stone chamber tomb, one jade from a crown and one ironware were uncovered. Of particular note, the jar coffins buried upright are considered as important resources that demonstrate the diversity of burial methods employed by those who used jar coffins in the Yeongsangang river basin area.
