“This is a monument erected to honor the loyalty and allegiance of Kim Cheon-il, a general of the Righteous Armies who served during Imjinwaeran (Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592). Kim Cheon-il studied under Yi Hang, and he was assigned to a government position at the age of 22, after which he held many different posts.
During Imjinwaeran, Kim Cheon-il stayed in Naju, where he raised the righteous armies along with Go Gyeong-myeong, Park Gwang-ok and Choi Gyeong-hui. When the Japanese forces began to retreat southward, he followed them, and engaged them in a fierce battle at the Jinjuseong Fortress. Unfortunately, the fortress collapsed and he took his own life along with his son Kim Sang-geon. The Jeongnyeolsabi Monument has a turtle-shaped supporting stone with a rectangular headstone. The headstone has a dragon, which looks like it is moving in a dynamic way, and there is an inscription that describes Kim Cheon-il’s activities in the Righteous Armies. The monument was erected at the Jeongnyeolsa Shrine dedicated to Kim Cheon-il by Confucian scholars in the 4th year of King Injo’s reign, which was 34 years after Kim’s death. The inscriptions were composed by Jang Yu and inscribed by Yi Suk. The name of the monument shown on the front face was carved by Kim Sang-yong.
