The large retusa fringe tree found in Yonggok-ri, Bonghwang-myeon in Naju is estimated to be around 400 years old. It is 14m tall and 3.2m in circumference. Situated at the entrance of the village, it serves as a shade for people to rest under and also acts as a sacred tree that safeguards the village.
According to an orally transmitted tale, Bae Jin, an elderly scholar from Seonggyungwan, came here from Dalseong, Gyeongsangnam-do in the early 1590s and founded a village. It is speculated that it was around this time that the retusa fringe tree was planted here. The tree has suffered damages caused by man and natural phenomena over the years, evidenced by a hole that is 60cm wide, 100cm long and 40cm deep found at 1.4m above the ground. There is a round 90cm tall platform with a radius of 3m nearby. Because of its high biolotical value, it has been designated as a natural monument by Naju City for protection and maintenance.
