The term, ‘gobun,’ means an ‘old or ancient tombs,’ and it refers to the burial mounds that can serve as important archaeological or historical resources.
The Songje-ri Ancient Tomb are located on a hill, where a low and flat hill extending from Taesan Mountain stretches toward the east and meets the Geumcheon Stream branching off from the Yeongsangang River. The ancient tombs are situated in the middle of a pine forest located on hill in the northeast side of Songcheon Village. To its east, there is a vast plain forming along the Geumcheon streamside. There had been actually two ancient tombs in this area, but one of them was destroyed and only the other remains.
Villagers call the ancient tomb “Dongsan” or “Goryeojang.” It is a round burial mound that is 20m in diameter and 4m in height, and the stone chamber is a semi-underground type created by excavating a hill. It is a tunnel-shaped stone chamber tomb with a vaulted ceiling.
The Songje-ri Ancient Tomb is the one and only tunnel-shaped stone chamber tomb with a vaulted ceiling found in Jeollanam-do Province to this day, and this is why it is regarded as an important historical site in the research on ancient tombs. It is also serving as a valuable resource in the studies of the relations with the jar coffin tombs of the Bannam Ancient Tombs.
