“Muyeolsa is a shrine built in the 21st year of King Jeongjo’s reign over Joseon to honor Muyeolgong Bae Hyeon-gyeong, Geumheon Bae Jeong-ji and Jeokjeolgong Bae Geuk-ryeom.
Bae Hyeon-gyeong was a military officer from Gyeongju that served during the reign of King Taejo of Goryeo. He played a major role in the founding of Goryeo, and was appointed as Grade 1 Meritorious Subject. He is known to have assisted Taejo in unifying the three kingdoms. The posthumous title conferred to him is “Muyeol.” On the other hand, Bae Geuk-ryeom contributed to the founding of Joseon and helped defeat the Japanese forces in the late Goryeo Dynasty. In the 2nd year of King Wu’s reign over Goryeo, he completely destroyed the Japanese forces that invaded into Jinju. His victory over the Japanese troops on Yokjido Island in 1378 is especially notable.
The Muyeolsa Shrine was partially demolished under the Seowon Abolition Order issued by Heungseon-daewongun in the 5th year of King Gojong’s reign, but it has been repaired several times thereafter.”
