Manhojeong, one of the most iconic pavilions in Naju, is managed by three family clans with the surnames Seo, Jeong and Yun. It is where the systems of Hyangyang (a contractual arrangement that allowed for a degree of local government) and Dongyak (Register of the Members and the Regulations of the Mutual Assistance Society of a Village) were implemented.
Since its establishment in the Goryeo period, its name has been changed several times to Musongjeong, Kwaesimjeong and many others. Fortunately, it was not destroyed after Imjinwaeran (Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592), and a decision was made to relocate the pavilion. That was when its name was changed to Yeongpyeongjeong. When the pavilion became dilapidated, Yeonggeondoyusa Seo Hong-jo played the main role in collecting rice from each household in the area to fund a repair project in the 50th year of King Yeongjo’s reign, and it was renamed as Manhojeong. The present-day appearance shows how it was repaired at the time.
