Admiral Cheam Na Dae-yong was a man who actually assisted Admiral Yi Sun-sin in the building of the Geobukseon (Turtle Ships) during Imjinwaeran (Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592). He was the most exceptional shipbuilding engineer among the members of the Joseon navy, and one of the bravest admirals as well.
The residence of Admiral Na is a thatched house that can be commonly observed. It has 4 kans (measurement unit) on the front side and 1 kan on the sides, and it faces the south. Both the house and gravesite of Admiral Na Dae-yong have been designated as Jeollanam-do Cultural Heritage Monument No. 26. His gravesite is located on the foothills in Oryong-ri, which is around 3km away from his house. Oryong-ri contains Bangjukgol, Janggunbawi Rock, Monument of Admiral Na Dae-yong, and Sochungsa Shrine where the portrait and ancestral tablet of Admiral Na are enshrined.
Every year on April 21, the Sochungsa Shrine hosts the Admiral Na Dae-yong Memorial Service. Although, generally speaking, memorial services are held on the birthday of the deceased or the anniversary of his or her death, the Admiral Na Dae-yong Memorial Service is actually held in time for the Science Day. This is to celebrate the spirit of creativity and scientific mind of Admiral Na, an excellent inventor and shipbuilding engineer who dedicated his entire life to the construction of warships and designed and built outstanding warships that no one had even thought of.
