Noan Catholic Church is the first Catholic church ever to be established in Naju, and it has borne witness to the 100-year history of Catholicism in Naju.
According to the Catholics at Noan, the history of Noan Catholic Church can be traced all the way back to 1894 when Jeong Rak (John), taking refuge from Seoul, operated a medicine dispensary in the nearby Nasan, Hampyeong, and evangelized Lee Min-suk (Paul), Lee Jin-seo (Thomas) and Lee Hak-seo (Paul) from Yangcheon-ri, Noan-myeon, after which the three visited Father Lee Nae-su (Augustine), who was recuperating in Muan in 1900, to be baptized. The three then played the central role in founding Gyeryanggongso. When it became too difficult to handle the influx of new visitors, they extended the church in the shape of cross and newly built the priest’s office in 1957. The church building has been maintained as is ever since.
Noan Catholic Church is a masonry building constructed with bricks and a red asphalt roof. It is regarded to have a well-preserved appearance. In recognition of its historical and architectural value, it was designated as Registered Cultural Heritage No. 44 on September 13, 2002.
