At 200m away from Jangyeonseowon Confucian Academy and Sangdeoksa Shrine dedicated to Museonggong Mun Da-seong, the progenitor of the Nampyeong Mun clan, and Mun Geuk-gyeom, there is the Munbawi Rock that stands 6m tall and is 5m wide. Associated with the Munbawi Rock is a legendary tale regarding the birth of Mun Da-seong, and thus the birthplace of the clan of Nampyeong Mun, one of the most famous surnames in Korea, is Pungnim-ri, Nampyeong-eup.
In 472 AD, the head of the Nampyeong Village brought a baby into his home to raise him. The rock where the baby was found was named “Munam,” and the baby became the progenitor of the Mun clan. Mun Da-seong demonstrated exceptional skills in the martial arts and later became the Daearang Daeguksa. The Munbawi Rock bearing witness to this history was designated as Jeollanam-do Folk Material No. 32 on December 26, 1995.
The Nampyeong Mun clan has held the belief that Mun Da-seong was born on this rock, and Mun Ak-yeon inscribed the words, “Munam,” on a 1m-tall monument and erected it here in 1851. In 1928, the Munnak Hong clan built a stone pavilion around the Munam monument. Then, in 1975, the Munseon Myeong clan demolished the old stone pavilion to build a house here, and hung a signboard that read ‘Munamgak.
