“The House of Hong Gi-eung is the head house of the Pungsan Hong family clan of the Docheon Village, and is situated into the innermost area of the village. It is an exemplary house that best represents the spatial layout of the upper class homes of Namdo, and even the garden provides insight into the traditional landscaping practices of the Joseon period.
There is a stone wall around the front of the sarangchae (men’s quarters), and there is a daemungan (main gate) in a straight line. On the northern side of the anmadang (courtyard), there is hoetganchae (shed), while the shrine was built alongside the anchae (women’s quarters) on the southern side, with a stone wall around it. The anchae was built in 1892 (29th year of King Gojong’s reign), while the sarangchae was built in 1904.
In anchae, there are two daecheongmarus (main floored rooms), and walls were built to separate the spaces according to function. This is a unique characteristic shared by the traditional houses found in the Jeollanam-do area. These buildings have gambrel roofs, and the sarangchae has a similar spatial layout as a byeoldang (detached house).
