The Five-story Stone Pagoda in Songje-ri was designated as Jeollanam-do Tangible Cultural Heritage No. 78 on June 2, 1980. One of the main body stones and the fifth roof stone had been lost, but the pagoda was completely restored through a restoration project conducted by Naju City in 1978.
The Five-story Stone Pagoda in Songje-ri consists has a unique two-level stylobate structure. To explain, the stylobate was not created using the typical dual stylobate construction method; instead, four slabstones were used to form the lower stylobate and a flat stone was laid on top. The flat stone was comprised a single slabstone without any sculpting work done.
The roof stone on the first story is fairly thick, and it is wider than the width of the flat stone of the upper part of the stylobate, which is similar to that of the Five-story Stone Pagoda in Eumnae-ri, Damyang (Treasure No. 506) and the Five-story Stone Pagoda in Geumgolsan in Jindo (Treasure No. 529). The Five-story Stone Pagoda in Songje-ri demonstrates the beauty of simplicity and neatness observed among the pagodas erected in the Goryeo period.
