Byeongnyujeong Pavilion situated along the Geumcheon Stream branching off of the Yeongsangang River presents stunning scenery that is difficult to see elsewhere in Naju. The pavilion is nestled on a hill, where there is a forest of bamboos, old zelkovas and old pines.
The pavilion was built on the former site of villa owned by Jo Ju, who served as the Hojochampan (Local Functionary) during the reign of King Sejong. After it came into the possession of his grandchild of the Gwangsan Kim clan, Kim Un-hae erected the pavilion on this site in 1640. Later, it was repaired in 1678 and 1862, and has since been relatively well-preserved. It houses eleven signboards written by Min Gyu-ho and Sin Heon, known for their exceptional handwriting, and others.
There is a maru (Korean-style floor space) surrounding the pavilion, with a room in the middle. The maru and columns as well as the walls were built with wood. When the windows are opened and lifted upward, you will be able to better enjoy the greenness and the water below the hill from inside the pavilion.
