Micheonseowon Gieon-mokpan refers to the woodblocks containing the inscriptions of the 25 books of 93 volumes of the poetry collection of Misu Heo Mok. The woodblocks were carved in the 15th year of King Sukjong’s reign for the printing of 861 pages in total.
Heo Mok studied under the tutelage of Jeong Gu at the age of 23. Hangang Jeong Gu studied under Toegye Yi Hwang and Nammyeong Jo Sik to master the academic disciplines, and was the founder of the Namin study of the proprieties and Wangsabudongnye (Theory that the proprieties observed by the king and the gentry cannot be the same). Heo Mok used the pen name “Misu,” which means that the “eyebrows are so long that they cover the eyes.”
The content of the woodblocks provides information on the life and achievements of Heo Mok, who was an erudite scholar in the discipline of proprieties. Despite being very old, it has been well-preserved and has no missing components. For this reason, it is considered highly valuable. At present, it is housed at the Micheonseowon Confucian Academy.
