“Nampyeonghyanggyo Confucian School, designated as Jeollanam-do Tangible Cultural Heritage No. 126, was founded in the 9th year of King Sejong’s reign over Joseon. It had been destroyed during Jeongyujaeran (Japan's Second Invasion of Korea) and repaired several times before the Daeseongjeon, outer three gates and inner three gates, and Myeongnyundang were newly renovated in August 2011. The Jungsubi (Repair Monument) Unveiling Ceremony was held some 600 years after the founding of the school.
The building layout is characterized by the typical “school in the front, shrine in the back” style. After passing through the outer three gates, you will see Myeongnyundang, Dongjae and Seojae, and past the inner three gates, there is Daeseongjeon, Dongmu, Seomu, Jegigo and Gosa. Inside Munmyo (Confucian shrine), there are a total of 27 ancestral tablets enshrined. The building is opened toward the north for access. In front of the stone wall at the entrance of Nampyeonghyanggyo, there are 18 monuments dedicated to 9 individuals including Nampyeonghyeongam Jang Hoe.”
