“The term, ‘saetgolnai,’ used to refer to the cotton cloth produced in Chodong Saetgol in Dasi-myeon and the people who produce it. Now, it is used solely to describe the cotton cloth produced in Dasi-myeon. The Dasi-myeon cotton cloth was famous across the country for its fine texture, and this is why it was offered to the royal court and highly sought after by the people of Manchuria.
In Cheongnim Village in Dongdang-ri, Dasi-myeon, Naju lives a woman by the name of No Jin-nam, who has been designated as Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 28 for having mastered the art of Naju saetgolnai production. No Jin-nam explains that he learned weaving from her mother-in-law, Kim Man-ae, after marrying a man living in Cheongnim Village. When Kim Man-ae was alive, she’d weave and produce cotton cloth in 15 to 18 days, and this practice has been passed on to her daughter-in-law, No Jin-nam. It’s been said that a skillful weaver like No Jin-nam can produce one pil (measurement unit for fabric) of cotton cloth in just three days.”
