The earthenware kiln site at San 27 Oryang-dong in Naju was discovered during a development project conducted in 2001 to create a grave site. A survey was conducted on the five kilns out of the seventeen kilns that were discovered, and based on the results, it was speculated that these kilns were used to make jar coffins.
The Oryang-dong Earthenware Kiln Site is located on the Naman hill district of the Yeongsangang River between the Bogam-ri Ancient Tombs and the Bannam Ancient Tombs. Because it is close to the Yeonsanggang River, it is considered the hub of water transportation. As a kiln site, where large jar coffins were fired during the Three Kingdoms Period, it serves as an important resource in comparative studies dealing with the production process for jaw coffins, production groups, transportation and interchanges, and in correlational studies concerning the Bannam Ancient Tombs and Bogam-ri Ancient Tombs.
In addition, the kiln site was discovered at a time when the production process for the jaw coffins used in the ancient tombs found in the Yeongsangang river basin area; thus, it is considered especially valuable in the cultural studies of ancient societies. Accordingly, the Oryang-dong Earthenware Kiln Site was designated as Historical Site No. 456 on October 27, 2004.
