“The Bogam-ri Ancient Tombs has been designated as National Historical Site No. 404. Bogam-ri Ancient Tomb No. 3 is considered one of the most notable archeological discoveries of all time.
According to the results of the survey conducted for 3 years from 1995 until 1997, a total of 44 tombs were discovered: jar coffin tombs, dug-out stone chamber tombs, stone coffin tombs, tunnel-shaped stone chamber tombs, and horizontal-entrance stone chamber tombs dating from the 4th century and tunnel-shaped stone chamber tombs dating from the late 6th and early 7th century. Also, gilt bronze shoes, earthenware and other articles have been excavated. Such massive tombs demonstrating such diverse types of burial methods has never been found elsewhere in the country. For this reason, the Bogam-ri Ancient Tombs are called the ‘Department Store of Ancient Tombs.’
The Bogam-ri Ancient Tombs are also regarded to have provided important resources for research on the ancient history of the Yeongsangang river basin, relations with Japan, indigenous people of the region, and relations with Baekje. Of particular note, an inkstone with a leg, which is speculated to have been made in the Baekje period, was excavated in Naju for the first time, and it has become a valuable resource in the research on written language and the administrative affairs of ancient societies.”
