This Buddha statue is enshrined as the main Buddha of the Daeungjeon Hall of Bulhoesa Temple. It is a type of geonchil Buddha statue that was created in abundance in the late Goryeo period until the early Joseon period.
Based on the long body, small face, clothing style, and depiction of the wrinkles in the clothes, it is speculated to have been produced in the early Joseon Dynasty when the Buddha statue style of the late Goryeo period was passed on.
The mudra or hand seal of the wisdom of Virochana, with the left hand put into a fist and wrapped with the right hand, is observed on Hwaeomgyeongbyeonsangdo dating from the late Goryeo Dynasty. This is one of the earliest examples of a statue showing this hand seal, and it also demonstrates artistic excellence. Thus, it is considered to have historical value, along with the Amitabha Statue at the Simhyangsa Temple located in the city center of Naju.
