Baekho Im Je (1549-1587) was considered one of the most prominent poets at the time, and he is viewed as one of the most romantic poets of the Joseon Dynasty. To honor the great writer, Naju City has established the Baekho Literary House, comprised of a special exhibition hall, multimedia room, and permanent exhibition hall.
The exhibition halls display exhibits that provide insight into his life and literary works, as well as his birth, family clan, hometown (Hoejin), educational ties, chronology of his life and works, and critiques on his works. The permanent exhibition hall on the second floor, in particular, you’ll find a massive display of “Mulgoksa,” the last words he spoke as he drew his final breath. There are also displays of the geomungo, bogeom and oktungso, which belonged to him.
Naju City plans to host an international symposium centering on the theme of life and literature to commemorate Baekho Im Je’s birthday (October 20), as well as a national Baekho Im Je essay contest and poem recitation contest, Baekho creative writing classes, Baekho tours (The head house of Baekho Imje’s family clan, Yeongmojeong Pavilion, his gravesite, etc.). Also, there are plans to create a Baekho Im Je research center and publish related academic materials by compiling his works and related research and promotional materials.
