“The Yeongsanpo
Lighthouse is the one and only inland lighthouse situated on a riverside in
Korea. Constructed as a reinforced concrete structure, the lighthouse has
survived to this day in a relatively intact form, with even the traces of
scaffold present in the main body.
The lighthouse was
established in 1915 to guide boats and ships carrying seafood and crops along a
48km waterway along the Yeongsangang River from Mokpo to Yeongsanpo. In
addition to its function as a lighthouse, it was also responsible for measuring
the water level of the Yeongsangang River. However, it naturally stopped
playing its role as a lighthouse when the waterway became closed off during the
Yeongsanho Stop Gate Construction Project in 1978. Since then, Yeongsapo Port
has become an “unlit port,” but the Yeongsanpo Lighthouse is lit at night as a
way to show people a glimpse of its magnificent history.
Next to the Yeongsanpo
Lighthouse is a cement bridge called Yeongsangugyo built in 1922. However, it
used to be a wooden bridge. Yeongsangugyo has been an important bridge,
connecting Naju with Yeongam, Gangjin, Jangheung, Haenam and Wando, and helped
the commercial districts of the Yeongsanpo area thrive. The white lighthouse of
Yeongsanpo is a witness to the prosperous past of the region.”
